The WineHQ developers around project leader Alexandre Julliard have released the next stable major version 7.0 of their Windows-compatible Wine runtime with WoW64 support for Linux, BSD and macOS. The new compatibility layer supports current GPUs from AMD and Nvidia:

AMD:

  • Radeon RX 6800
  • Radeon RX 6800 XT
  • Radeon RX 6900 XT
  • Radeon RX 5500M

Nvidia:

  • GeForce GT 1030

Intel:

  • Intel UHD Graphics 630

For the first time, Direct3D applications are officially supported on upcoming APUs from AMD, codenamed Van Gogh, which is especially important in view of the custom APU of the Valve Steam Deck handheld PC coming out in February.

Wine 7 now also handles WoW64

Wine is also now able to fully support the architecture of WoW64, the “Windows-On-Windows 64-bit” subsystem, for the first time.

WoW64 makes it possible to run 32-bit Windows programs within a 64-bit Unix host process without having to install any 32-bit Unix libraries. This makes Wine even more flexible and compatible with Windows.

In addition, Wine 7.0 adds multi-head support to its Direct3D implementation, allowing users to select which monitor a Direct3D program should use for full-screen mode.
